The topic of the eight lectures documented here is my so-called Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model of language. I started working on this model around 2010 and have developed it ever since. The latest version to date was published in my book The Dynamics of the Linguistic System. Usage, Conventionalization and Entrenchment (2020). The Shanghai lectures mark an important milestone in the development of the model, because Professor Shu’s invitation offered the unique opportunity to present my ideas in an extended format considerably exceeding the limit of a usual stand-alone guest lecture. While the 2020 book presents a later and more advanced version of the Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model, the present book largely preserves the content of the lectures as they were given, thus opening a window on a very important stage in the development of the model.

自20世纪70年代诞生以来，认知语言学逐步发展壮大，已成为语言学主要流派之一。
